Hubcentric versus universal spacers
Hubcentric spacers have a spigot that locates on the hub and a matching recess for the wheel, so the wheel stays centred on the hub rather than relying on the nuts or bolts. Universal spacers have a larger bore and suit more cars, but spigot rings are recommended to keep the wheel centred.
Bolts, studs and thread engagement
Thin spacers often need longer wheel bolts or studs so the thread engagement stays the same as standard. Thicker bolt-on spacers bolt to the hub and then carry their own studs for the wheel. Always torque everything to the handbook figure and re-check after the first short drive.
